Herniated & bulging discs
A disc problem can be alarming, but most respond well to patient, conservative care. We treat it carefully — and know when to refer.
Most herniated and bulging discs improve without surgery — research shows the majority shrink or resorb on their own over time, and conservative care manages symptoms while that happens. A disc problem occurs when the soft center pushes against or through the tougher outer ring and irritates a nearby nerve, causing back pain and sometimes radiating pain, numbness or weakness. We treat discs with gentle, evidence-informed methods — and refer for imaging or a surgical consult when warning signs call for it.
The encouraging part: the large majority of disc injuries improve with conservative care over time. The job is to take pressure off the nerve, control inflammation and rebuild support, while watching carefully for the rare signs that need more.
Common causes we see
- Lifting or twisting under load
- Years of poor sitting posture
- Age-related disc wear and dehydration
- Sudden trauma, including auto accidents
- Repetitive bending at work
How we treat it
We examine to confirm the disc is the source and screen for anything needing referral or imaging. Care is gentle and nerve-aware: low-force adjustment or mobilization where appropriate, soft-tissue work, traction and supportive therapies to decompress and calm the area, and a careful exercise progression to stabilize it.
We move at the pace your nerve allows, and we’ll always tell you honestly if your situation is better served by co-management with another provider.
Can chiropractic help a herniated disc?
For many people, yes — conservative chiropractic care can relieve disc-related pain by reducing nerve pressure and improving support. We use gentle, disc-appropriate techniques and refer out when surgery or specialist care is the better path.
Will I need surgery?
Most disc injuries never require surgery. Conservative care is typically the first step, and we’ll help you recognize the uncommon situations where a surgical opinion is warranted.
How many visits will I need?
It depends on how severe your condition is and how long you've had it. After your exam, the doctor explains exactly what they found and lays out a clear plan — including how many visits to expect — before any treatment begins. Many patients notice meaningful improvement within the first few visits.
Is chiropractic care safe for a herniated disc?
For most people, yes. Every new patient starts with a thorough history and exam so we can rule out anything that needs medical attention first. We tailor techniques to your comfort, use gentler approaches when appropriate, and refer you to the right provider if chiropractic isn't the best fit.
Can I get a same-day appointment?
Often, yes. We keep room in the schedule for same-day visits Monday through Friday, 9am–6pm. Call 858-455-7654 and we'll do our best to see you today — or request a time online and we'll confirm by phone.
